National Junior Honor Society

Attention Prep 7 and Prep 8 students:

Here are the 2018/19 guidelines for potential membership in the National Junior Honor Society. Please read the guidelines closely. Any questions should be directed to your homeroom teacher.

Membership in the NJHS is not a right, rather, a privilege. This is an honor awarded by the school to students who meet all criteria set by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and adopted by the administration and faculty of Our Lady of the Hamptons School.

Students are INVITED to apply for membership.

Step 1) Students should begin the process by submitting a letter stating from the candidate stating why he or she believe that membership should be granted prior to March 15th.

Step 2) After letter submission, students interested in applying must download all NJHS documents and forms.

All documentation must be submitted to your respective homeroom teacher by March 25th.

All documentation should be submitted in a binder or folder.

Applicants must obtain required signatures and letters in person.

Binder or folder contents include:

- the cover bearing signatures as specified

-copies of letters of testimony from parents, parish or community leaders, service group

-a letter from a parent attesting to WHY this student should be recognized y NJHS

-a letter from the candidate stating why he or she believes that membership should be granted.

Late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances.

Applicants must submit their own documentation.

The NJHS committee will meet and review all applications after the submission deadline.

Applicants will be contacted if needed to discuss applications.

Once all applications have been reviewed, Sister Kathy will send out invitations to this year’s successful candidates.

Students in Prep Seven who have not satisfied all criteria at this time may be eligible for consideration again in eighth grade.

Students in Prep Eight who were inducted in the spring of 2018 must resubmit credentials for affirmation. If all standards have not been met, the candidate MAY not be re-inducted.

National Junior Honor Society

In order to qualify for acceptance into the National Junior Honor Society-Maria Regina Chapter (NJHS), a student must meet the five-point criteria, as outlined in detail below.

Scholarship   First and foremost, students are to hold a strong academic record.  The student's overall average, which includes main academic subjects and specials, is to be at least an 85%.  The majority of student grades should be 4’s and 5’s.  A student may not have any 1’s across the board.

Service  Students are expected to volunteer and help out both in school and in the community without any compensation.  In school, a faculty member must vouch for the specific service and the amount of time dedicated to such.  In the community, the overseer of an activity should be detailed as to the service and number of days/hours.  Students are to have at least 10 accredited school service hours and at least 15 accredited community service hours.  This must be documented in writing and signed by the recipient of service.  

In addition, the student is expected to have a face-to-face meeting with their pastor/priest who can then lend support to service in their respective parish.

Students must obtain any signatures or recommendations on their own not through a parent or guardian.

Leadership  Traits of leadership should be evident on a consistent basis.  Examples of leadership include being resourceful in groups, demonstrating problem-solving abilities, organizing events in school and/or the community.  Faculty, family members, community leaders, and peers should attest to the qualities of leadership. 

Character   The student should be described as a genuine and respectful individual.  He or she should, on a consistent basis, display maturity, honesty, reliability, and integrity.  The student is expected to have a good disciplinary record, both inside and outside of school.  A student who has three or more behavioral demerits will not be considered. 

Citizenship   To be a good citizen means to understand, appreciate, and act in accordance with all freedoms and justices.  Laws, both on a local and national level, are to be constantly abided by.  Adults should vouch for the student as one who demonstrates mature participation and responsibility in school/community organizations, such as scouts, church groups, sports teams, and other extracurricular activities.

NOTE: At least two formal letters outlining student credentials and exemplifying the above attributes should be submitted with the application.  One should be from a family member who has been in close contact with the student for at least the last two years.  Another should be from a non-familial community member who has overseen the student in various activities.  Examples of acceptable community members include, but is not limited to: a pastor, youth leader, scout master, coach, or club director.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Use this checklist to help you meet the requirements:

Scholarship

____ No 1’s as final trimester grades.

____ No more than one 2 in a trimester.

____ A G.P.A. of 3.5 for each trimester.

____ Must demonstrate responsibility as a student.

Tips: Check PowerSchool regularly AND communicate with teachers to discuss any concerns over grades as needed.

 

Service

____ A minimum of 10 school service hours.

____ A minimum of 15 community service hours.

Tips: Document your hours and save all letters of service in a folder or binder.

 

Character

____ Demonstrates maturity, respect, good behavior at all times.

____ No more than three behavioral demerits.

Tips: Model good behavior at school, at home, and in the community.

 

Leadership

____ Takes a leadership role in school and community activities.

Tips: Find ways to help organize and plan school events. Meet with faculty members and community leaders to find ways to help and lead.

 

Citizenship

____ Participates in school and community organizations and teams.

____ Demonstrates an understanding of roles and responsibilities of citizens.

Tips: Find teams, groups, and organizations to be a part of in your school and local community.
